Shreyas Iyer named captain of Kolkata Knight Riders

Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders who was announced as a franchise ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League which is expected to start at the end of March.

“First of all, we are very pleased that we were able to successfully bid for Shreyas at the IPL auction and gave him the opportunity to lead KKR,” said Venky Mysor, CEO and CEO of KKR. “He impressed everyone as a quality striker and we are confident he will do well as a leader at KKR.”

KKR bought Iyer at last weekend’s Mega Auction 2022 for a whopping 12.25 crores INR after an intense bidding war. The former Delhi Capitals captain was sacked ahead of the 2022 edition by the franchise, which had placed its latest bid of INR 9.5 million to re-sign the mid-tier star before retiring from the race. The Gujarat Titans came in late but KKR managed to get around the newcomers to enlist Ayer’s services.

Ayer led Delhi to her first IPL final in 2020. In 87 IPL appearances for the team since his debut in 2015, Ayer has hit 2,375 runs with 123.95 hits.
